“The Struggle for Existence”

Photogravure and photopolymer on Hanemuhle. 2023 - work in progress. The title refers to Kristian Krog’s iconic painting from 1889. Behind Krog’s visualization of the working class was a desire to change their life situation. Behind this series is a desire to change our behavior in the interaction with nature. Plates of people and landscapes are pressed together. The goal is to explore and visualize the interaction between humans and nature through a technique that connects two different expressions in a visual composition.

The staged images of people are inspired by various works from art history. The common denominator can be experienced in the apparent apathy of people. They are captured in moments where they just are.

The naked lady on the bed has taken the pose from Edward Munch’s “Puberty”, and the sisters in the studio are inspired by his “Two Little Girls with Blue Aprons”. The landscape images are documentary photos that show nature characterized by human presence.

By printing the images together, I will investigate how the interaction between humans and nature can be represented in a visual and symbolic way.
